Decision fatigue
What does willpower have to do with decision fatigue?
STRESS
Do you remember the days when you had to make a lot of decisions throughout the day and by the end of it felt completely exhausted? 🥱Most likely you made a lot of spontaneous decisions during those days. It is very likely that in that period you deviate from your plan, procrastinate and delay important tasks. 😤🗒️This is especially frequent behaviour by the end of the day.
Roy Baumeister conducted an experiment with people who were fasting. 🍽️ After some time he invited them to spend some time in a room where there were fresh chocolate cookies 🍪and radishes. 🥦First group was allowed to eat anything they wanted and the second only radishes. Right after the two groups were asked to complete a geometrical puzzle 💠 although it was an impossible one. First group gave up after 20 minutes and the second one - after 8 minutes! ⏳ Radish eaters gave up so quickly because their willpower was already reduced by an effort to resist the cookies. So when they took on a puzzle, they didn’t have enough willpower to complete a difficult task. 🙅♀️And it wasn’t because they were more hungry. Research showed that our willpower is a limited resource. ⬇️ We use it to resist temptations, but also to make decisions.
Steve Jobs chose the same clothes 📲, Barack Obama prefers same style suits to avoid the decision fatigue. 🥱
And especially in the evening you tend to surrender to your impulses, low instincts. 🍰🍫📺🚭What to do?
Rituals and habits help you make decisions faster, so that your mind automatically choses the better option. If you get into a habit of e.g. healthy eating, 🥗 over time you don’t need to use your willpower to resist temptations and use less energy on decision making. You already made the decision! Same goes for business!
It takes about 66 days to form a automatic habit rather than a conscious act. 🤸♀️If you are trying to form a more complicated habit, the process will take longer. ✅👍
